What to do: Recondite & Wickerpark THIS Weekend + 10 More Events

This week, the hottest events are Recondite at AHM and the annual Wickerpark Festival in Batroun. However, it’s far from all of what Beirut has to offer this week!

Thursday

Love Night

I’m really enjoying Thursday nights here. For one, it’s still packed, but not as heavily as Saturday nights, meaning it’s much easier to walk around and dance without elbows, lit cigarettes and drinks hitting you every step. Rea’s also been doing an awesome job, along with Tala, Wass, Jade and whoever is on the lineup each Thursday. The mood is quite happy and upbeat, I’d highly recommend for a date night.

I’m really excited about seeing Monlink live personally, as well as Behrouz for the first time. It’s the last Electric Sundown this year, so make sure you head there at sunset time!

Saturday

AHM x Recondite

Any true friend of mine will know that my all-time favorite artist, one artist that “I’d choose if I was stranded on a deserted island”, is Recondite. I cannot count the times I’ve traveled to see this man perform, but they are far too many, and all were mind blowing.

I’m extremely happy he’s finally coming to Beirut, and can’t fucking wait to see him destroy a club right here at home! I’ll leave you with some of my favorite tracks of his:

and his re-work of part of Plastikman’s EX performance!

RSVP Here and see you all on the dance floor!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

Wickerpark Music Festival 2017

This annual gathering of all things alternative and indie has become something to look forward to towards every end of summer. Every year, thousands of folks from all over Lebanon converge on Batroun for Wickerpark.

This year, I’m excited to see Hello Psychaleppo on the ticket, along with local sweethearts Who Killed Bruce Lee, Kinematik, Alko B, The Bunny Tylers and my boy Chyno x Rajul Al Adidi! Quite the diverse mix of amazing, live music! Ziad Nawfal and Roland Ragi will also be spinning DJ sets during the festival!

The Gärten presents Superlounge and Mira & Chris Schwarzwälder

This week at the pyramid has a true taste of Germany, with Dusseldorf’s Superlounge and Berlin’s Mira & Chris on the ticket! I love Mira, every time I’ve seen her at a festival somewhere in Europe, or at KaterBlau, has been special. My favorite is perhaps her set at Bachstelzen right after Fusion last summer!

The House Party V.4

The weekly Saturday hip hop rendezvous at Skin City is back, with DJ Ram, YSF and Chyno making sure you have a blast from sunset till sunrise. I haven’t seen YSF spinning hip hop in a while, and I miss Chyno’s MCing terribly, so looking forward to the 4th edition of The House Party!

Yogis in Lebanon: Beware of the Lebanese Church

From the infamous “AlJoumouriya” article

It seems like every few weeks, some “priest” writes a horrifying Facebook note or article in a newspaper, detailing the “evils” of Yoga, how it’s “satanic”, how it makes you “hysterical”, derives from “pagan” rituals, etc.

For most of us, it’s a funny and sad reality of religious people: they’re afraid of what they don’t understand, and consider anything more popular than Sunday mass, as a “satanic threat” to be dealt with. Now, anyone who went to a school, and owns a device that can connect them to the Internet, knows none of this is true. We just shrug it off, laughing at those priests and their followers, and how stupid and hateful they are.

A more recent example (BlogBaladi)

However, if recent history has taught us anything, it’s that the Lebanese church and its enthusiasts might be stupid, but they are also very powerful. Below, I will discuss two instances about how the church’s oppression materialized in the real world, and why Yogis should be careful, and not just dismiss this orchestrated smear campaign as just another example of religious stupidity.

The Metal Witch Hunt (Late 90s-Early 00s)

It all started in 1994. A troubled kid showed up to morning assembly at my old school, pulled out a gun, and shot himself in the head. He was the son of a big-shot military commander, and his suicide came right after Kurt Cobain had shot himself in the face. Questions about abuse within the boy’s family were quickly stifled, and instead, a new culprit was blamed: heavy metal (not sure Nirvana qualifies as heavy metal, but hey, what else do you expect form the Lebanese chuch and authorities?).

That’s when the infamous metal-head witch hunt began, and is sadly, still ongoing almost 25 years later… Metal heads were actively hunted down by Lebanon’s police at the behest of the church. Their concerts would be raided with armed, plain-clothed undercover police. Their bands would be detained and questioned. Kids with long hair, skulls in their clothes or wearing a “Metallica” shirt would be arrested, forced to do a drug tests and charged with “blasphemy” and “worshipping satan” and other absurd charges.

Here’s what it felt like, from a PopMatters.com article:

When Deaïbess, a Christian, showed his interrogator the rosary around his wrist, he was accused of wearing it as “camouflage”. After signing papers promising that he would not listen to Nirvana or worship the Devil, he was released — only to be arrested again in 2007 for operating a heavy-metal-friendly pub in Beirut.

Each wave of arrests has been an effort by Lebanese leaders to distract the public from a political crisis, such as the end of the Syrian occupation in 2005 or increasing gas prices in 2002, Deaïbess said. “I firmly believe that every time the government needs to distract people from important issues, they will start an attack on metalheads. We are always the scapegoat of this rotten society.”

After the arrests in 2002 and 2003, many metal musicians fled Lebanon for good, weakening the scene. “[Arrests] will happen again. The Lebanese metal community is too weak right now to do much about it. I hope we’ll have enough good records that are supported internationally, so that our voice is so loud they can’t shut it out anymore,” Kaoteon said.

If you were a teenager like me back then, you heard about this. I still remember my school banning anything that was black, or had skulls or skeletons on them. A metal band’s patch on your backpack meant you were immediately in trouble.

This hysteria culminated in regular “reports” of “satanic rituals”, especially in and around cemeteries. Almost every suicide of a young person was automatically assumed to be part of a “black mass”. Tele Lumiere even broadcast live “exorcisms” of metal heads, who in retrospect, seem to have been mentally ill people, being abused for religious people’s satisfaction…

Disgusting stuff…

The Mansur Labaki Scandal

Convicted child molester, wanted by the INTERPOL

This is the single event that made me lose complete faith in Lebanon. Convicted by his peers in the Vatican as a serial child molester, Labaki, the man behind most of the Maronite hymns and songs you learn in Catholic school, has an INTERPOL arrest warrant in his name now. Instead of facing justice, he’s still a free man, although the church did give him a slap on the wrist: he can’t do mass anymore.

What’s shocking in this case, isn’t that a priest was molesting kids, that is a trait that has been recurring worldwide for decades. It’s how it was covered up. Rumors are that a TV series idolizing the predator priest are in the making, and will be, you guessed it, aired on Tele Lumiere (the exorcism junkies).

However, the thing that scared me the most, that showed how vicious and evil the church and its acolytes can be, is how they tried to cover up the stories of his victims in France. Victims and their families in France started a website, where victims can share their stories and people can support them in their recovery. The url of this site was subsequently banned from being accessed in Lebanon, and the same url, but with a .com instead of a .net, was set up that “exonerates” the disgraced priest… I found this out while working at LBCI News, and it took me an entire week of pounding the pavement, to find the paper trail. The .net could be accessed via TOR back then, but not on Lebanese DSL or mobile Internet. This ban was based on a judge’s order. So, in other words, the Labaki fans banned the victims’ support website, used the exact name, but with a .com instead of a .net, to try and hide the truth. If you are convinced of innocence (despite the INTERPOL warrant and Vatican guilty verdict) then why try to hide the stories and replace it with your own?

The Church is Evil and Powerful

We have a tendency to dismiss the religious as stupid fanatics, and even though that is largely true, they’re also very dangerous. They’re the kind of people that forcibly put sexual abuse victims in “der el saleeb” without due process. The kind of people that barricade journalists inside an Orthodox church after word came out an orthodox priest was also abusing children in Koura (Pandalemon). They’re the kind of people who 23 years later, still shut down and ban Metal music.

So, yogis, be careful. This orchestrated smear campaign about “being satanic” isn’t just religious people being religious people, it’s paving the way for another witch hunt. You might think it’s farfetched, but think of it this way: if a priest calls up a police officer and tells them some kids with dreads are having a “yoga festival”, who do you think he’ll believe? The vegan kid with dreads, or the priest he needs a blessing from to stay in his position? Just look at what the psy trance scene has been suffering through the past few years…

Organize yourselves, get good lawyers and always make sure you are on the good side of the cops and government. Take the priests who accuse you of satanism to court. Don’t let the mixture of ignorance, corruption and religiosity steamroll you like they tried to do to the metal scene, the psy scene and victims of sexual abuse by priests.

Don’t just laugh it off, you are in actual danger, by an extremely powerful oppressor that answers to no one in Lebanon.

Namaste everyone! ❤

Make the Most of ADE 2017 with adidas NMD

Amsterdam Dance Event is by far the most important yearly event in the electronic music world. Apart from the crazy parties, it also features plenty of meetings, workshops and exhibitions for both artists, hardware and software makers as well as promoters and venue owners.

This October, two of you lucky folks will be going to ADE, all expenses paid, with adidas NMD!

How to Win with adidas NMD

adidas is sending two of you lucky folks to ADE this year, all expenses paid. You get a flight, accommodation and the full ADE pass. All you need to do is buy any pair of the new adidas NMDs (which I wore to ADE last year, and 6 other festivals in Europe!) and punch in the code on NMDwin.com to get in the draw! Winners will be announced on September 15, 2017. You can click on the banner below, or click here, to lear more and enter the draw!

Till then, I will post updates on events and venues I recommend. Good luck everyone, and have a blast!

What’s ADE?

ADE began in 1995, when House, Techno and other electronic music genres became known and beloved worldwide. ADE includes a lot of daytime activities for professionals in the electronic music world, as well as a 5-day nighttime festival.

ADE attracts more than 350,000 people from around the world, and happens in 115 different clubs and venues in Amsterdam. With more than 450 scheduled events, and 2200 artists performing, very few events can compare in terms of scale and importance.

Personal Experience

In 2016, I was lucky enough to attend my first ADE. I was living in Berlin at the time, and decided to take a train and catch the events and nights I was really looking forward to attending. I learned a lot of things last year, which have made me even more excited for this year’s, and will help me be better prepared so I can focus on the fun and music, and less on the logistics preparation.

Getting Around

The first thing you need to know, is unlike other festivals and events, ADE happens all across the beautiful city of Amsterdam, not in just one big location. This means that you need to factor in getting to the venues and clubs, late at night, beforehand.

Unfortunately, most public transport closes at night, and you best option would be a night bus that comes every half an hour or so. Taxis are not the best option either, given that thousands of other people are also looking for a cab, and the lines for taxis are often as long as the lines into the venue! Plus, you will probably get a 1.5x or 2x surge in prices for Ubers, given the incredibly high demand in just a short span of time.

What I would recommend is renting a bike. Amsterdam is one of the most bike-friendly cities I’ve ever been to, and if you’ve ever been, you’ll understand that bikes are the primary mode of transport, not cars, not trains or trams. What’s nice about the Netherlands is that it’s also completely flat, which means if you’re like me, and not a pro-biker, you should be fine biking cross-town without getting the wind knocked out of you.

However, be careful where you park your bike, and make sure you securely lock it. The usefulness and ubiquity of bikes in that city, means bike thieves are a risk you need to factor in, so if you don’t wanna lose your bike rental deposit, make sure you park somewhere safe, close to the venue, and securely lock it.

Choosing the Events You Wanna Attend

We all love the big names in our scene. Who wouldn’t wanna see someone like Dixon or Richie Hawtin? However, often the nicest thing about events like ADE, is the new talent you discover there. I don’t know about you, but I get a lot more excited when I discover a new artist live, than when I watch one of my favorites again.

Make sure you keep checking the ADE program as we get closer to the date. At the time of writing this post, the program was 47% complete, and more and more artists and performances will be announced as we get closer to October.

It Can Get Chilly

Amsterdam can get pretty cold at night, especially if you’ve been dancing all night indoors with thousands of other music lovers. Make sure you get warm clothes with you, and don’t worry, most venues either have a coat check or lockers you can rent to store your backpacks and jackets. Also, get extra socks and clothes if you can, in case you get wet from the rain. It’ll save you going back to your hotel rooms to change!

My Favorite Venues

Gashouder

This is by far my absolute favorite space in Amsterdam (along with the NDSM docklands). It was built in 1902 as a massive tank to store gas, and today, it’s a massive venue that can easily fit up to 3500 people, with a high, arched ceiling. Do try to attend at least one or two events at this iconic Amsterdam venue!

WesterUnie

Westerunie Venue

I love this venue, and it’s right next to Gashouder. Make sure you attend an event here! Then walk across the street to Gashouder!

Clubbing Culture and Respecting Others

Amsterdam is one of my favorite places to party. How many times have people skipped the line in front of you? How many times were the bathrooms too disgusting to use? How many times did you struggle to walk through a crowd while an artist is playing?

Well, all these problems don’t really happen in Amsterdam. Clubbers really respect other clubbers, and always respect other people’s personal space. It’s easy to make your way out of the dance floor if you need a breather, and everyone waits in line at the constantly cleaned toilets. Even getting drinks is easy, where you don’t need to wait for change, but just use the tokens you buy when you rent your locker and make it into the venue.

Food and first aid is also always available, and completely anonymous, so take it easy on the drinking, always take time to rest, eat and take some time to relax a little during your super hectic schedule. Remember, it’s 5 days long, so pace yourselves to make the most out of this experience, and don’t burn your energy out the first night.

Have a Blast

No one does it like the Dutch do, and the electronic music scene there is more than just a night out dancing, but also a cultural one. Many artists debut their new work there, lots of events have first-time collaborations, or something special just for ADE. It’s more than just a festival or night out clubbing, it’s an experience you can’t really get anywhere else in the world.

If you’re like me, and don’t work in the industry, you won’t have to worry about the conferences and workshops, just the festival. So, plan your schedule ahead of time, and enjoy all the other fun and exciting things Amsterdam has to offer in between. Make friends, start conversations with fellow clubbers you meet, and make the most out of those 5 days.

If you plan your logistics and schedule right, you will have an absolutely amazing time at ADE, so do you research, make sure you mark everything on the ADE app to help you keep track, and please be safe and enjoy your time!

9 Drone Photos of Some of Your Favorite Spots in Lebanon

Maher Iskandar is a good friend, and he’s taken up a new hobby of aerial photography. I tried to fly a drone for the first time this month, and I must say, it was quite the exhilarating experience, and I keep checking AliExpress every couple of days toying with the idea of buying my own! Till then, if ever, enjoy these awesome drone shots from Maher.

Batroun Coast

Who among us hasn’t walked on the massive ancient Phoenician Wall on the old part of Batroun? It’s also the area where most of us like to get our toes wet in the Mediterranean!

Mar Mikhael

Everyone’s favorite happy hour street for the past few years, as seen from above!

Jbeil (Byblos)

I love this shot of Jbeil, where you can see one of my favorite churches in the world, St. John with it’s gorgeous courtyard full of ancient mosaics, as well as the ancient “mina” port and the blue stuff are the seats for Byblos Festival!

Downtown Beirut (Place De L’Etoile)

Most of out childhoods involved a lot of time spent with family and friends here. Sadly, for the past few years, it’s been the scene of several crimes by Lebanon’s government against unarmed, peaceful protesters with righteous demands. It’s sad this place is a ghost town now, but what else would you expect with politicians like this? You do get a glimpse of Capitole on the bottom left though!

Jaziret El Araneb (Rabit Island, Off the Coast of Tripoli)

As far as hidden gems ago, this is one of my favorites. It’s a small archipelago right off Tripoli, a few minutes boat ride away. It’s sandy beaches are usually nice, clean and quiet, but try to stay away from them during the weekends if arguileh and Lebanese folk music isn’t your thing.

St Georges Hospital (Achrafieh)

Above Mar Mikhael, and beneath Sassine, you can see lots of neighborhoods of Achrafieh in this gorgeous shot from above, with the St Georges Hospital’s helipad clearly visible at the bottom.

The New Sky Bar

Most of you have probably seen endless hours of Instagram stories of the new Sky Bar, here’s a view from above!

Metn (Beit Chabeb, Bikfaya)

This is a view I’m very fond of. I grew up and went to school in Metn, and spent a lot of time in towns like Beit Chabeb, Bikfaya and many others you can see in this shot. In the distance, you can even see parts of Kesserwen, like Ajaltoun and Ballouneh!

13 Mind-blowing Events this Eid Holiday

I know I say this every week, but that’s because it’s honestly true. Every week, it’s like the entire clubbing and events scene in Lebanon outdoes itself this summer. With places like AHM and the new pyramidal Garten, as well as a host of impressively good party crews, it’s no surprise that this summer has been pretty insane, with everywhere filling up several days every week.

Thursday

Love Night: Don’t Be Shy at AHM

I’ve been to this night in AHM three times now, and each time keeps getting better and better. This week’s edition is even more special, since Friday’s off and everyone can stay later than they usually do on a Thursday night. Jade, Tala, Rea and Wass will be on the 1s and 2s, and the energy of them all on the decks, often back-t0-backing it suddenly, is awesome. Nothing too heavy, and you won’t hear any Techno kicks, but the funky, housy, sexy vibe is strong with this night.

COYU x Fabrizio Rat — La Machina (Live)

I love COYU! I had the pleasure of interviewing him back in 2015, and he’s as awesome a human being as he is a DJ. The Barcelona-based Suara Music powerhouse always knows the right blend of Techno and House to leave both die-hard fans of one side of the spectrum, as well as light-hearted aficionados of both, equally happy. I’m even more excited about Fabrizio, who will be performing live at Skin City this Thursday. This man combines my two favorite genres: classical music and Techno. So, there’s no doubt I’m missing his live performance!

Friday

Onyx Music Festival

The second I saw that Three Machines were playing one of their legendary live sets, I immediately clicked “going” without even reading where or why. Reading the where and why though, and everyone else on the Onyx Music Festival lineup, made me certain I really did want to click “going”. The venue is amazing, nestled between the beautiful rock formations in the heights of Keserwen’s Feytroun. The lineup is jampacked with awesome local talent, like Rolbac, Eli, Mayhm, Whoisbibz and Patch.

Apart from this mouthwatering lineup, there will be a campsite to chill and take disco naps, as well as plenty of kiosks and games to try out between sets and live performances. MoonMonkey are also getting their SkyBench, so if you love heights, up in the mountains, then you’re in for a treat.

Escape the heat and traffic, and make sure you don’t miss Three Machines’ live set. Trust me, you’ll be forever changed if you still haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them live!

Stil vor Talent Showcase: Teenage Mutants, Niko Schwind

During my time in Berlin, I grew very fond of the Stil vor Talent crew. Many of my closest Berliner friends work at SVT, and the artists on that label are some of my favorite discoveries in the past 2 years, and a constant feature on my SoundCloud likes and playlists.

This Friday, Teenage Mutants and Niko Schwind are flying in to Beirut to do an SVT showcase at b018. Our beloved bunker will give us a taste of Berlin right here at home.

RSVP Here

Off & On The Roof: Jixo & Danz, Kaytek, Wael, Raphael Merheb

6 Beirut born and raised heavyweights are coming together on the Skin City rooftop this Friday. Our boys holding it down for us in the DXB Jixo & Danz will be joined by Kaytek, Wael, Raphael Merheb and Jool for another Off & On the Roof banger. The last two Fridays at Skin City have been insane, and lasted way into the early morning hours despite starting just before sunset!

RSVP Here

Aya Metwalli live at Yukunkun

I love Aya Metwalli’s work, and I’m looking forward to her pre-birthday bash at Yukunkun this Friday night, where she will debut some new songs as well as performing some of her favorite ones we already know and love. Khodor, Mouka and Essabbagh will be playing DJ sets throughout the night as well!

Saturday

AHM x Richie Hawtin

I was getting goosebumps while uploading the AHM x Richie Hawtin cover photo above. Techno God Richie Hawtin is coming to Beirut’s AHM, with his Model 1, to officiate the plot of land at the Beirut Waterfront as a true Techno temple on Saturday. There are no words that can describe how excited I am about this booking. It’s arguably one of my most anticipated this year. I’ll be getting my Richie Hawtin and Plastikman vinyls for Richie to sign. Ultimate fangirl mode: ON!

RSVP Here

Road to BPM with Paco Osuna

As if having the M_nus label boss at AHM wasn’t enough, one of my favorite artists signed to Richie Hawtin’s label is also in Beirut on Saturday at The Garten! I still remember the first time I saw him perform, at the top floor of the Tannous Group building in Karantina. It was sublime, with his flavor of Techno ushering a beautiful sunrise above Beirut before all the skyscrapers had ruined it…

RSVP Here

The Butcher’s Bride

I love Liliane. I love Hamed. I love it even more when they collaborate. Liliane’s mastery of live electronic music, coupled with Hamed’s voice and lyrical choices, means this part-planned, part-improvised collaboration at the beautiful Metro Al Madina venue is something you don’t wanna miss.

Tanlines II

With such a massive Saturday night lined up, why not start it by the pool, drinking and being serenaded by Ronin, Patch, Rise 1969, Padawan, Soapbass and Ledwarf at Soak in Batroun? The 12-hour affair starts at 10AM and will wrap up before you need to head back down to the city for this epic Saturday night in Beirut. The diverse lineup means fans of every part of the electronic music spectrum will have their fair share of the daytime pool party!

RSVP Here

The House Party V.3

Hip hop lovers have been finally recognized and acknowledged by Lebanon’s primetime event organizers. For the third week straight, urban music lovers have a place to come together, grind and shuffle at the Skin City rooftop with Fifteen20 Ave! This week, DJ RAM, DNK and my homeboy Chyno are on the ticket! I miss seeing Chyno live, I don’t think I have since he played at Fusion Festival in Larz last summer! Anyway, he’s back in Beirut after a tour in Eruope, and if you like them baggy pants and caps, then you know where to be this Saturday.

RSVP Here

EZARA at NO AFTER // NO PARTY

It’s a long weekend, jampacked with awesome stuff happening. The must-go-to after party this season is hosting Ezara this Saturday night (Sunday morning? :P) with Kaytek, Pablo and Fady Ferraye! If you still feel like you’re not all danced out, then head down to one of Beirut’s most inclusive crowds and dance away till the sun has risen to almost mid-day levels!

RSVP Here

Yoga Circus

With the long weekend, full of insane parties and lineups, you’ll need to ground yourself again and unwind a little. This Saturday, in the beautiful town of Naas, above Bikfaya, Serah is back at it with Yoga Circus. The day starts at 10AM, and will go on till the gorgeous sunset from up in the mountains. Several teachers will be providing their own flavors of Yoga, with mandala coloring, meditation and a rhythmic flow sunset with Serah.

Check out the day’s schedule on the FB event, and snack and munch on guilt-free snacks and meals throughout the day!

On Your Way: A Startup to End those Annoying “Anyone Coming from X to Beirut Soon” Statuses

Not a single day goes by without someone posting the most random locations ever, and asking if anyone is coming from there to Beirut. I assume these people wanna order something off Amazon, but given how long it takes, and that the authorities at the airport might confiscate it, or make you pay absurd tariffs for releasing it to you, we’ve become desperate in trying to find kind travellers that might be willing to help us out.

OnYourWay.io is a Lebanese startup trying to fix this uniquely Lebanese problem, where they promise us PayPal every year, and where Uber had to do cash on delivery cause people here are still too scared to use their credit cards online for some reason (even with credit cards from banks designed solely for that purpose to be more “secure”).

How It Works

It’s a peer to peer service, and OYW is the intermediary. If you want to order something off Amazon for example, you can “post” what you need, and travellers using OYW might want to fulfil your request. In return, you “reward” the traveler for doing that service for you, with 3 suggested amounts: 20, 50 and 100USD (and you can also set your own reward).

The traveller then buys the item themselves, and meets you to give you whatever you’ve ordered. Once the transaction is complete, OYW charges your credit card, and transfers it, plus the reward, to the traveller. The service fee is 7% of what you purchased’s price, plus 1.99 euros for every order.

What I Liked

I loved the feature where you just paste the Amazon.com url of whatever you wanna order, and the form basically auto-fills itself, saving you the trouble.

I also liked that it’s a pretty smart way to solve a problem that seems unsolvable: ordering online to Lebanon. It’s sad we need to jump through hoops, either cause big corporations don’t care enough about our market, or because our government is so hungry for squeezing money out of us when we wanna buy something from abroad. This seems to be a streamlined solution, and some hope for the poor lost souls who post those silly statuses and never get a reply… (except maybe on the DXB-BEY route).

I hope they will create an Android app soon, and I will definitely register as a traveller next time I’m abroad to see if I can get a good enough reward to splurge on a VIP lounge somewhere (not the MEA one :P)

Nader Saab Charged, Despite Huge Campaign to Quash the Scandal

It’s super rare that the Lebanese judiciary does the right thing, and today, this post is celebrating that: the judiciary’s independence and sticking to the evidence instead of buckling under the weight of wastas and bribes.

Today, LBCI reported:

This comes after massive attempts to quash this scandal, both in the media and legally.

Legally Barred from Speaking About The Case

Saab’s angels in power felt that people shouldn’t be discussing the case of Farah Kassab’s death. So, a court in Beirut decided that discussing the case publicly will cost you a 50 million lira fine (33.33K USD). For me, this meant that they are trying to cover it up, so people forget and the outrage dies down. Luckily, the Lebanese judiciary stuck to their investigation, and he was finally charged with his alleged accomplices today.

Media War by MTV

Before MTV became the (3rd ranked) station that calls others “shrameet”, it was a proponent of the cosmetic surgery industry, as you can clearly see the second you tune in. So, after initially covering the Nader Saab story, a couple of days later, they became his number 1 defenders, picking apart reports from other TV stations, point by point, in an attempt to play down the charges and paint a flowery picture of the disgraced doctor.

Just look at a screengrab of how many times they ran the story that is aimed at exonerating him:

What’s funny, is in a different tab, one of the stories is about how helped a terrorist (Hoblos) attempt to conceal his identity, then the whitewashing clickbait titles with a “?” at the end come after.

It’s Important the Trial Stays Impartial

Now that he’s been indicted, I can only imagine the pressure and media campaign will only intensify. This is why it’s absolutely necessary the judiciary stays its course, so that the truth will come out, and Saab can be either found guilty, or exonerated of any wrongdoing.

Small victories for justice like this, restore the lost faith most Lebanese have in their justice system. When stars get off the hook for attempting to smuggle 5g of cocaine into the country, but university kids get 6 month in Roumieh for “looking like a stoner” and being forced to do a urine test, this isn’t exactly a shining record for Lebanon’s justice system. So, to see the filthy rich, very-well connected be brought to justice, is a rare occurrence, and one that should be applauded and protected from wastas and bribes.

Let’s hope the trial is as persistent as the investigation and indictment. Let’s also hope the upcoming, sponsored media campaign on stations for hire, doesn’t shift the focus from the facts, to suggestive questions as titles to try and change the public opinion like in the screen grabs above.

To the Nader Saab Fans

Despite the annoying ads on MEA, this isn’t a thirst for revenge from a surgeon. A mother died, and the alibi given changed a few times, and hinted at attempting to cover something up, not pre-meditated murder. If he’s innocent, then what are you worried about? But if not, he needs to pay the price for killing a human being due to negligence, and then trying to change the facts to protect his reputation.

Innocent until proven guilty, but to suggest this is some conspiracy, is shameful. Let’s put our faith in the judiciary, so far, they’ve done what should be done, and let’s hope the trial is fair and swift, so no one dies needlessly anymore and we go about our lives as if nothing happened.

A Bittersweet Victory Over ISIS in Lebanon

ISIS surrendered. Lebanon’s Army secured a swift and decisive victory. Lebanese soil is free from the terror group, and for good. More than 50 of the terrorist fighters were killed in the battle, and six of our soldiers were martyred.

The bottom line is, Lebanon won, and the terrorists surrendered. However, the courage and decisiveness showed on the military side, were met with outright treason, spinelessness and cowardice on the political side.

ISIS murderers, the beheaders of our soldiers, the suicide vest makers that attacked our towns and cities, the hateful, barbaric terror group that occupied our land, now leave aboard air-conditioned buses, to serve a purpose that we as Lebanese can never comprehend. To make matters worse, our soldiers kidnapped by the terror group, have been dead since 2015, and were just a few kilometers from our fortified positions the whole time…

Terror Must Never Be Met With Impunity

No matter how powerful an army, when the justice system is weak and inept, peace and prosperity can never endure. If every time we get in a fight with terrorists, we end up releasing their most dangerous members from our jails, and allowing them safe passage with their weapons to another part of our region, we are losing.

How many terrorists have we seen granted immunity, released and driven in politicians’ cars so they can restart their career of murder of terror again? How many of those released, will come back to murder our fellow citizens? What excuse can there be for not serving justice on those that have attacked our very way of life, and everything we stand for and believe in? Those that threaten the values we hold dear, such as freedom, equality and tolerance?

The catastrophe started when the counter-offensive in 2014 was abruptly stopped, leaving the soldiers kidnapped by Nusra and ISIS at the mercy of their captors, just a few minutes’ drive from our forward operating bases. The political decision to stop that counter-offensive aimed at rescuing our soldiers, will forever haunt those that stood by, popping bottles of champagne in celebration, as our soldiers were being executed and tortured, with the rest of our forces ordered to stand down instead of finish their mission and end the occupation by terror groups long ago.

Lebanon must never negotiate with terrorists. By letting them kidnap our people, then succumbing to their demands to release their own, is the wrong message to send. What would stop these terrorists from doing it again, to release whatever’s left of their prisoners in Lebanese custody?

How can the people in command in this country look at the faces of the martyred sodliers’ families and loved ones, fellow soldiers and citizens, and explain to them after everything that could’ve been done, we settled for white caskets draped in Lebanese flags, in return for the freedom of the terrorists who put them in those caskets? All that, years after they had been executed, and we still had hope, despite all odds and the spineless handling of Lebanese authorities of this national catastrophe.

Adding Insult to Injury

Most people feel that the authorities knew about the soldiers’ fate, and yet did nothing about it till it was too late. Purposely misleading us, till the time was right for their political calculations, using the offensive as a cloak for more sinister plans they had prepared that will damage Lebanon and the Lebanese just as much if not more than ISIS and its likes.

We got a day of mourning for a Saudi monarch, but 9 of our soldiers, abandoned by our leaders, left to die a horrible death at the hands of terrorists, didn’t even get a second glance from our politicians. I guess those martyred soldiers don’t fill the politicians’ bottomless pockets the same way old Saudi monarchs do (who cut aid they promised to our military for petty reasons, yet still get a day of mourning for some reason)…

Can the politicians in this country sink any lower? Forcing irrational taxes down our throat, using an illegitimate parliament, during the daze of battle, wasn’t enough for them it seems. They also had to insult the memory of our fallen soldiers, and insult the intelligence of their families, and us, the taxpayers who pay those politicians’ salaries.

Why Hezbollah is OK with this

What I still don’t get, is how Hezbollah is ok with this. After making the battle of Ras Baalbek and El Qaa harder for our army, they were the orchestrators of this second withdrawal of the terrorists into Northeastern Syria. The terrorists fled over the border, to where HA is operating alongside the Syrian Army, and they OK-ed their withdrawal, humiliating as it was, to go and fight another day, instead of being killed in battle, or brought to justice in court.

Does HA still have use for them for another time? To utilize the excuse of fighting them for different ambitions later down the road? Who knows, and most of that is just speculation, but I still can’t wrap my head around why HA would be ok with this, and create a status quo on the ground that would make Lebanese authorities also go along with this horrific slap in the face, of letting our occupiers, killers of our citizens and soldiers, go free, and even get them buses to safely escort them to safety… They should see their day in court, and serve the sentences handed down to them and spend the rest of their days in jail, not go on to fight another day, risking all of our safeties and futures.

We’re Sorry

To the families of the soldiers, we’re sorry this happened to you. I cannot imagine how worse your pain must be, losing your sons because of the treasonous behavior of our illegitimated leaders, who know let their killers walk free.

The elections are coming, and each and every one who helped create this situation, will be sent home for this. Let them dare extend a fourth time. The rage is now almost uncontrollable, and with their savage tax hike, pretty soon, most of us will have nothing left to lose and the proverbial camel’s back will finally crack, and all hell will break loose…

To the martyrs of this battle, and our kidnapped martyrs, you will always be in our country’s memory, and we are all forever indebted for your sacrifice. The least we can do, is make sure it was worth it, and everyone who conspired or let you down for their own personal politics, needs to pay, sooner or later.

UNICEF’s Awesome Social Experiment in Ein El Mreisseh #AbtalAlMadrasa

How many of your parents took out loans, sold land they had inherited or never spent on themselves to afford sending you guys to school and university?

How many online debates have ended with a consensus that “education” is the solution?

What would your life be like if you didn’t have your school and university days as part of them?

Where would you have met all your closest friends, your business partners or even your life partners if not between classes and at recess?

Education is important, for so many reasons. It is the great equalizer, where doing well will guarantee you a shot at the life you want, no matter how humble your beginnings or hard the road to get an education was.

At times like these, with so much instability, turmoil and hopelessness, generations are being lost in the crossfire. Dire economic situations are forcing parents to pull their children from school, and into jobs they should never be doing as minors.

In all the gloom though, one good thing about Lebanon is that anyone who seeks an education, can get one. All children in Lebanon, whether Lebanese or refugees, have a right to an education. A chance to be whatever they want to be when they grow up. A chance to lift up themselves and their communities, suffering at the hands of corruption, neglect and conflict.

With the recent savage tax hikes in Lebanon, and the chaotic increase in school tuition, with more and more Lebanese waking up to find themselves on the wrong side of the poverty line, means many kids might get pulled from school.

This campaign is a reminder to everyone, all parents, guardians and community leaders that everyone has a right to free education in Lebanon’s public schools.

Keep your kids in school. Make sure all the uncertainty and unrest don’t have devastating effects that will last for generations to come. Educate your children.

UNICEF and the Ministry of Education launched a campaign now that it’s “back to school” time. The campaign seeks to raise awareness that every child on Lebanese soil is entitled to a free education. The video below is the campaign’s brilliant social experiment carried out on the Corniche in Ein El Mreisseh.

Lebanese Army Shows the World How to Obliterate ISIS

The Lebanese Army has shown the world how to put ISIS cowards to shame, and how to liberate soil that the terrorist scum have occupied for years now.

As we go about our daily lives, worried about stupid things like getting stuck in traffic, our heavy work schedule and getting ready for classes to restart, our soldiers are fighting a battle that will go down in the history books, that we will tell our children about, that we will give as a real life example when we want to illustrate a gargantuan task handled gracefully and masterfully by our armed forces.

The Lighting Fast Operations

The above video was released by the Lebanese Army on August 22nd, 2017, and it’s a first-hand look at the operations in Ras Baalbek and El Qaa, as well as bird’s eye views of the battle.

The one emotion this video and others like it on the Lebanese Army Twitter feed stirred in me was pride. Another realization this video helped me make was how difficult this battle is, and how seemingly impossible the task looks, but how successfully the Lebanese Army is pulling it off.

What’s for sure is that the Lebanese Army has tightened the noose around the terrorists’ necks, and smoked them out of the holes in the ground they’re hiding in. All this, in record time.

A Moment for our Martyrs

The bravery and selflessness showed by our soldiers and officers did not come without a price. Here are the names and faces of the five hero martyrs who died in the operation to liberate Lebanese soil from ISIS terrorists.

Abbas Jaafar

Elie Freijeh

Othman Chedid

Bassem Moussa

Walid Freij

Thank you for your service. You made the ultimate sacrifice, so that the rest of us can stay free and safe.

What’s Next

The Lebanese Army is preparing for the fourth phase of the operation, to liberate the final 20 square kilometers of land occupied by ISIS terrorists. The “emir” of the cowards has fled Lebanon, and their pleas for their surrender and humiliating retreat have been met with flat-out rejection form Lebanon, who will do no such thing till the whereabouts of the 9 captive Lebanese soldiers in ISIS custody are known.

In other words, complete and total victory is close, and it is now a matter of hours and days before every last millimeter of Lebanon is free of the scurge that is ISIS.

Lebanese Politicians Should Be Ashamed of Themselves

If our army represents the most lofty of ideals and virtues, at the opposite end of that spectrum, are Lebanon’s politicians and political parties.

As if the Hezbollah offensive in Aarsal wasn’t enough to make the Lebanese Army’s task even harder, by giving the ISIS fighters a head’s up to dig in and boobytrap their fortified positions, Lebanon’s politicians went a step further into their cesspool of criminal corruption.

Utilizing the public’s preoccupation with the military operations, Lebanon’s scumbag politicians passed laws and made decisions that will hurt Lebanon’s taxpayers, including the soldiers giving their life on the frontlines.

Passing the disgusting taxes on the sly, while all the focus was on the Army’s battle against terror, is a new low, even for Lebanon’s politicians. It’s even led some to assume that the timing of the military operation was for that purpose, and in preparation for the upcoming elections in 2018…

Tfeh 3layekon.

Get Home Safe Boys

Despite the disgusting politics being done in the dark rooms of Lebanon’s government, the Lebanese Army has proven that the love and admiration they receive from Lebanese citizens is justified.

At the end of the day, no matter what, our boys in uniform have liberated Lebanon from ISIS, becoming the first country in the world to successfully do so. All the dirty deals the politicians are doing can never undo this shining military victory, accomplished by the Army, with no support from non-state actors despite the attempted smear campaigns by some politically-affiliated pens and tweets for hire.

Thank you for your service, we are forever indebted to you, and know as we go about our daily lives, that we owe that safety and stability to our boys in uniform. Please, get home safe ❤
